St. Mark’s Square, known as La Piazza, has been the center of Venetian life since Marco Polo’s day, and it is from here in 1270 that he embarked on his maritime adventure around the world. Today, cruise ships crowd the Grand Canal along the Piazza, just as fleets of merchant sailing ships plied the canal in the 13th Century.
