The ancient citadel here was the largest monument made of clay bricks in the world, until it was reduced to rubble in a 2003 earthquake. Its heyday was from the 7th to the 11th centuries, when Bam sat at a crossroads of major east-west trade routes. An international team is currently attempting to rebuild and restore the citadel.
