Slow-motion disaster, thousands of acres of wind-driven sand dunes south of Mogadishu threaten to engulf villages, roads, and arable land; the latter comprises only 15 percent of Somalia's area. To stem the tide, the government has mobilized volunteers and national rangeland employees in a bold effort to stabilize the planting cactuses and casuarina trees.
