The Marsh Arabs, who once occupied the marshlands of the Tigris and Euphrates river basins, built houses out of woven reeds. But after Iraq’s marshes were systematically drained in 1991, this unique and ancient civilization has all but disappeared. Today only a few thousand marsh dwellers remain. Basra, Iraq
