Simplicity and purity are two values that can be discerned in nearly all facets of Japanese life and art. They are clearly visible here in these photos of the wooden geta lined up outside the Tawaraya Inn Kyoto. The use of tatami mats even today appears in many western style homes and apartments is further evidence of these yearnings. Even when a home has carpeting, or wooden floors, Japanese will usually wear slippers rather than shoes. There are also tatami areas in many restaurants and even in public facilities like libraries.
