The 400,000 square-kilometer (150,000-square-mile) Loess Plateau is covered with a two-hundred-meter-deep (220-yard-deep) layer of loess-unsatratified sandy soil mixed with clay. Terrace farming is the answer to growing crops in this loose soil.
