The Malwiya Minaret seems to have been inspired by Mesopotamian ziggurats like the Biblical Tower of Babel, where multiple languages were brought to the world’s peoples after the Great Flood. It still stands guard over the remains of the Great Mosque of Samarra, and a children’s playground, complete with hand-cranked Ferris wheel.
